Media Opportunities at Children's Justice Conference

Media who cover child and family welfare and juvenile justice will want to mark their calendars for the Children's Justice Conference, April 21 - 22 at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Seattle.

Noted as one of the largest child welfare training events in the nation, the annual conference gathers leading experts to discuss and coach new developments in the safety and welfare of children with professionals in social services, justice, law enforcement and related fields.

Seminar and workshop topics range from child fatality crime scene investigation techniques to the use of canine companions for youth in courtrooms. The conference will also cover such subjects as overrepresentation of children of color in foster care, understanding teenagers, children in substance abusing families and causes of neglect.

Actor, author and child welfare advocate Victoria Rowell is the April 21 keynote speaker. Rowell won the NAACP Outstanding Debut Author Award for "The Women Who Raised Me," was a foster child and is the national spokesperson for Casey Family Services. As an actor, she is best known for her roles in The Cosby Show and The Young and The Restless.

Dr. Jonah Martin Edelman, keynote speaker on April 22, is co-founder and executive director of Stand for Children. Dr. Edelman graduated summa cum laude from Yale University and attended Oxford University on a Rhodes scholarship, where he earned a Ph.D. in politics.

The 16th Annual Children's Justice Conference is sponsored by the Department of Social and Health Services Children's Administration and the Children's Justice Interdisciplinary Task Force.
