Governor Christine Gregoire and the Washington State Legislature, when
faced with a difficult budget shortfall in 2005, addressed the
challenges that our state faces in improving Washington's child welfare
system, providing health care coverage, breaking the cycle of chemical dependency and mental illness, and improving the lives of
people with disabilities.
The decisions they made in the 2005 legislative session will strengthen
the safety net for individuals, families, and children who need our help
in times of personal and family crisis.
The governor and legislators agreed on a budget totaling $26 billion for
state government, of which DSHS receives $7.88 billion (state general
fund), and $17.2 billion when federal dollars are included.
The biennial budget took effect July 1, 2005.
