Motivational Interviewing in DVR
The Washington State Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) uses
Motivational
Interviewing (MI) as a cornerstone of being an effective, customer-focused
agency.
There has been growing interest in using Evidence-Based Practice (EBP), such as Motivational Interviewing,
within vocational rehabilitation services. The positive outcomes from the use of EBPs in other human
service fields has caught the attention of vocational rehabilitation and suggests that
efforts to increase the use of research-based approaches enhance the provision of vocational rehabilitation services.
DVR’s intent is to facilitate an ongoing cultural shift where VR staff consciously and
strategically function from a customer-centered, strength-based approach that will better
support customer and successful outcomes.
The overall project focus is to provide training and supervision for staff to become
competent in MI skills and strategies, and to assist in improving VR processes in order to
achieve positive outcomes associated with evidence-based practice.
