DASA's productivity in research
and evaluation is due, at least in part, to the strong
partnership it has had with the research community over the last
decade. This is most evident in DASA's Research Subcommittee of
its Citizen's Advisory Council. This Subcommittee consists of
over 90 substance abuse researchers (including researchers with
interests in co-occurring disorders) from the University of
Washington, Washington State University, Western Washington
University, the Veteran's Administration, various state
governmental agencies, and from private research organizations.
They come primarily from Washington State, although a few also
come from Oregon. The subcommittee meets three times a year.
The Subcommittee has a number
of purposes which include:
- Fostering collaboration on
research of mutual interest to Subcommittee members and DASA
- Providing advice and
guidance to DASA's research and evaluation efforts:
- Supporting DASA's ability to
respond to legislative requests by providing information,
sharing expertise, testifying at legislative hearings; and
- Collaboratively pursuing
research grants.
The Research Subcommittee has
contributed to DASA in many important ways since its inception
in 1990. First, a number of studies have been conducted by
Subcommittee members in conjunction with DASA that have had
significant policy implications. Second, Subcommittee
members have contributed significantly by providing expert
testimony at various legislative hearings. Third, Subcommittee
members have collaborated with DASA in submitting grant
proposals with great success.
