Susan Barkan

Susan Barkan is the Associate Director of Research at Partners for Our Children, a first-of-its-kind collaboration between the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services, the University of Washington School of Social Work and private sector funding. Her work is focused on child welfare systems research and the evaluation of programs that aim to improve the lives of child welfare involved children and families.

Susan has over twenty years of experience working in the field of epidemiology and parent and child health. She has worked within and across community, academic, private, and government settings on research and evaluation efforts focused on the elimination of disparities in health and wellness; social determinants of health; parent and child health; community-based, collaborative intervention research and evaluation; and, child welfare.

She is an Advisory Committee member for the Urban Indian Health Institute in Seattle, WA and she also has been an active member of the King County Racial Disproportionality Coalition since 2009. She earned a Ph.D. in chronic disease epidemiology from Yale University and a BA in psychology and biology from Antioch College. She completed a National Institute of Mental Health-funded postdoctoral fellowship in Family Violence at The Children's Hospital in Boston, MA. She is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Washington.
