DSHS urges people to celebrate Americans with Disabilities Act and to utilize training and job services

OLYMPIAWashington residents, particularly those with disabilities and their families and supporters, have much to celebrate tomorrow (July 26), the 12th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The federal law ensures basic civil rights protections that most citizens take for granted to people with disabilities.

“Before this act was passed in 1990, people with disabilities were often discriminated against and had difficulties getting and keeping jobs. Even simple activities such as going to the library or store, watching a movie or catching a bus could be impossible tasks,” said Mike O’Brien, director of the Department of Social and Health Services’ Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR).

DVR exists to help eligible people with disabilities live independently and find meaningful and rewarding jobs.

As part of this mission, DVR counselors make vocation and other training services possible.

“DVR provides comprehensive education, training and employment services to eligible individuals to meet their unique needs,” said O’Brien. “We are committed to help people with disabilities integrate and participate fully in the social and economic mainstreams.”

In addition to celebrating the passage of the ADA, O’Brien urged all Washingtonians to celebrate the life of Justin Dart, Jr. who was widely recognized as the father of the ADA. Dart, who died on June 22, was a human rights activist and recognized leader in the international disability rights movement.

O’Brien urged people with disabilities or those who know persons who could benefit from DVR’s services to contact the nearest office by calling 1-800-637-5627. Information is also available at the following website: www1.dshs.wa.gov/dvr
