Ticket to Work Acronyms

BPAO, CDR, EN, EPE, FBR, HWD, IPE, IRWE, PABSS, PASS, SSA, SGA, SSI, SSDI, TWP, TWWIIA

BPAO – Benefits Planning, Assistance & Outreach: People who can help you figure out how your benefits will be impacted if you go to work.

CDR – Continuing Disability Review: A review Social Security conducts to determine if you still have a disability.

EN – Employment Networks: Agencies that are participating in the Ticket to Work program by providing employment services to people with disabilities.

EPE – Extended Period Eligibility: A Social Security Administration work incentive for people with disabilities. It allows working individual to keep their benefits for 36 months after they go to work.

FBR - The Federal Benefit Rate is the maximum dollar amount that you can receive in federal SSI cash benefits on a monthly basis, provided your countable resources are less than the SSI Resource Limits ($2,000 for individuals, $3,000 for couples). The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is used to establish both an individual and couple maximum benefit rate annually, which take effect on January 1st of each year. View current and past FBRs.

HWD – Healthcare for Workers with Disabilities: A state program that allows people with disabilities who are working to purchase Medicaid coverage at a low premium.

IPE – Individualized Plan for Employment.

IRWE - Impairment Related Work Expense are work expenses that are related to your disability can be included in the work incentive called "Impairment Related Work Expense (IRWE)" when:

1. The item or service enables your customer to work;
2. Your customer needs the item or service because of your disabling impairment;
3. Your customer pays the cost and are not reimbursed by another source (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance;
4. The expense is "reasonable" – that is, it represents the standard charge for the item or service in your community; and
5. Your customer is paid the expense in a month in which they are or were working (occasionally, an impairment-related work expense may be used before the first or after the last month of work activity).

PABSS – Protection & Advocacy for Beneficiaries for Social Security: This program provides advocacy services to individuals who receive SSI or SSDI who want to work.

PASS – Plan for Achieving Self-Sufficiency: A work incentive for people on SSI who want to save money while they work towards a goal that will make them more independent.

SGA - Substantial Gainful Activity is the performance of significant and productive physical or mental work for pay or profit. These figures are automatically adjusted each year.

SSA – Social Security Administration: A federal agency that provides SSI and SSDI benefits.

SSI – Supplemental Security Income: Benefits for people with disabilities who do not have a work history.

SSDI – Social Security Disability Insurance: Benefits for people who have a history of working and their work history is interrupted because of a disability. Also called ‘Title II’.

TWP – Trial Work Period: A nine month period when a person on SSDI can return to work and still receive a full benefits check regardless of how much they earn.

TWWIIA – Ticket to Work and Work Incentive Improvement Act: The law that created the Ticket to Work program and made changes to many work incentives for people receiving SSI or SSDI benefits.
